This invasive procedure is preformed via a “sternotomy” which involves cutting through the breastbone (sternum) and spreading open the ribs for greater access to the thoracic cavity. Open heart surgery includes coronary bypass surgery for coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is a chronic disease in which there is a “hardening” or atherosclerosis of the arteries on the surface of the heart. During surgery, a heart-lung machine may be used to support the patient’s circulation while the heart surgeon opens the chest and makes the necessary repairs to the

heart or to the arteries on the heart’s surface. During bypass surgery, the surgeon places a conduit vessel to the blocked coronary arteries that lie on the heart’s surface, but the heart itself is not opened. This surgery takes approximately five (5) hours to complete and is performed by Bon Secours’ world premier heart surgeons and cardiac-trained professional staff.

Open heart surgery is also performed often for patients who have a defective heart valve and who require that an artificial heart valve be put in its place. There are different types of open heart surgery, for various conditions that need to be discussed with your heart surgeon.

The choice of which type of heart surgery will be performed depends upon your heart condition and your overall health at the time surgery is performed.

Open heart surgery does not use the heart-lung machine in all procedures. When this machine is not used, these procedures are referred to as “off pump surgery.” In these operations coronary artery bypasses can be performed without having to stop the heart or use the heart lung machine.
